Trauma Treatment: An Integrative Approach for All Patients
“Trauma is healed when an individual can relax their bodies, desensitize themselves to traumatic content, and integrate fragmented memories.”[1]
Traumatic events are said to affect approximately 61 percent of men and 51 percent of women in the U.S. Further, over 90 percent of patients seeking help in public mental health care settings report a trauma history.[2] On October 11th, 2019, four esteemed trauma treatment providers will present an intensive educational session for professionals, “Treating Trauma Through the Stages: An Integrative Approach” at the 11th Annual Eating Recovery Foundation Conference in Denver.
Effective trauma treatment
The long-lasting effects of trauma are hard to overstate. A trauma-informed approach is a necessity for today’s mental health care providers.
“In this presentation we will draw the map and also show you the colors that it takes to produce effective and successful treatment for post-traumatic stress disorders and co-occurring conditions and behaviors,” shares Lara Effland, LCSW.
Discussing Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, body-based interventions, and exposure work, the presenters will discuss the integration of evidence-based approaches used to treat posttraumatic stress disorder and trauma related symptoms in high-risk populations. This presentation will focus on how DBT lends itself to treating traumatized patients and how this aligns with our top down and bottom up approaches to helping our patients achieve post-traumatic growth.
The protocol and principles of trauma treatment
With the right treatment, patients are able to learn the tools and skills they need to recover — in spite of the powerful ways that trauma has impacted their lives.
“Protocol and Principles: We need to know both when it comes to providing the very best care for our patients. When working with complex trauma, it is crucial to have a map and guide to refer to, the protocols, the science behind when and how we do what we do. However, when working with people, none of us are uniform and every person needs an individualized plan. So, between the lines of the protocol and what stage we are focusing on, lies the principles, the art behind the science,” shares Lara Effland, LCSW of Eating Recovery Center and Pathlight Behavioral Health Centers.
Through experiential and didactic teaching, the clinicians will provide conference attendees with insight into how trauma treatment in higher levels of care can effectively be tailored to each patient’s individual needs.
Attendees will receive training and learn tools appropriate for different stages of trauma recovery and at various points in the continuum of care. Attendees will also learn effective strategies to support individual patients and leverage the support system in recovery.
